Submissions and Contests

Submissions and Contests

Let me tell you what I’ve been up to … besides writing, but writing-related.

  • Finalist in the 2023 ‘Coming Home” Poetry Contest (Oprelle Publications) — This was my first ever writing contest submission and my poem, All the Days, was actually written for a 100-word serial memoir I am working on. With a little re-wording and formatting, I submitted it on a whim at the end of last year. I have been recently notified that the print anthology will be published and available in March 2024, i.e., any day now. I’ll let you know when I learn more, but am excited that my first nerve-racking submission made the cut. Whew!
  • 04 Feb 2024 – Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest. The contest has not closed yet and announcements are not due until 15 Aug 2024. Humorous writing is not something I do or probably even do well, but I submitted a parody. It was a fun challenge and I am happy to be gaining courage to enter writing contests and submit my work for review. I look forward to sharing it here, in the future, for your thoughts. And remember—if I can do it, you can do it.
  • 28 Feb 2024 – The Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) Debut Dagger 2024 (U.K.)—”an international competition for the opening of an adult/YA crime novel and synopsis, … aimed at debut writers.” Although I originally set out to enter my cozy mystery novella in a local contest, I found this one at the last minute and thought it was more suitable for my ‘Perfect Scents‘ story. Those who make the long list will be notified in April, followed by short-listers named in May. Although I would love to make the short list, I will be thrilled to appear on the long list. Again, I’m mostly thrilled that I entered it into a contest for review. You can check out the general premise for ‘Perfect Scents’ here, in The Reading Room at ‘Old Stones’.
  • 15 Mar 2024 – Prime Number Magazine (PNM). On this same date, I went to my first meeting of a local Flash Fiction Writing group. Homework assigned included submitting a 53-word story about ‘march’ (there was more to the prompt, but ‘march’ was the essence). By the way, ’53’ is a prime number, hence the name of the flash fiction magazine. Submissions were due that same day by midnight, which I managed. I look forward to sharing news of my submission, Orienting March.
  • 18 March 2024 – Southeastern Writers Association (SWA) Contest. The contest is open to members only. I submitted the first 10 pages of Perfect Scents for consideration of the Thursday Writers’ Cozy Mystery Award. It was great to learn that both the SWA and CWA allow simultaneous submissions for these contests.
  • 18 March 2024 – another submission to PMN, this time for their Prime Number Magazine’s Poetry Awards. Cracked Will is my submission, and time will tell if I cracked well enough.

And there you have it … now it’s time to get back to editing my Perfect Scents. And don’t think I’ve forgotten about The Red Martyr … stuff is in the works!

Your turn … write away!
